Offered under a special license agreement with Herr Nursery in Germany.
A distinct sport of standard Jonagold. The fruit exhibits a more intense
red coloration covering a greater portion of the fruit than the standard
variety. Rubinstar'sŪ fruit colors much more uniform throughout the tree.
This allows potentially fewer pickings. The fruit ripens approximately
one week ahead of standard Jonagold. Also, RubinstarŪ has been shown to
be less susceptible to sunburn.
Jonagold fruit can get too large for optimum packout price, RubinstarŪ
tends to provide fruit about 1 size smaller than other Jonagolds.
The tree has a more compact growth habit than other Jonagold mutations.
This permits a substantial savings in spraying as well as less effort
and expense in pruning to maintain good vigor and high quality fruit.
