Crabapple Pollinizers The search for good pollinizers
continues with considerable interest in flowering crabs.
The crabs have a number of potential advantages,
especially the blooming characteristics - most bloom on
both spurs and one-year wood, which extends the blossom
period considerably. In this way, the likelihood of
coinciding with the blossom period of the commercial
variety is increased.
We favor pruning shortly
after bloom so new shoots will grow, and take greater
advantage of the flowers on one year old wood for
pollinizing the following year's crop. This type of
pruning also helps maintain a slender tree.
MANCHURIAN The white,
medium-size flowers have very heavy pollen. Blooms early
to mid-season, and pollinizes same time frame. Good bee
activity. Tree is vigorous, with upright growth.
INDIAN SUMMER Abundant pink flowers with extended
bloom period. Blooms with King bloom of Red Delicious.
Pollen germination is good. Tree moderately vigorous and
rangy.
SNOWDRIFT A very profuse
bloomer. Good pollinizer for medium to late-blooming
commercial varieties. Small to medium-size white flowers
attractive to bees. A bushy, oval-shaped tree if not
trained and of low vigor.
Virus Clean Nursery StockSince the early 1940's C&O has been
working closely with the Washington State Department of
Agriculture developing and producing Certified virus
clean nursery stock. Today most of our fruit trees are
available in Certified stock. Before 1930, few viruses
that affect deciduous fruit trees were known. With
today's technology, virus diseases can now be dealt with
effectively. Both rootstocks and propagating wood used
are systematically indexed to ensure that they are free
of all known viruses. It is in the grower's best
interests to purchase certified virus clean nursery
stock whenever available.
